Race Technology DL1

What is a DL1?

The DL1 is a small (4.3" x 3" x 1.2") GPS based data logger.  It's features include:

  • Built in 5Hz GPS receiver with WAAS enabled

  • Software key upgradable to 20Hz post processing (+$300)

  • 2g digital 3 axis accelerometer

  • Compact flash memory storage

  • 8 12bit analogue inputs (0-12v) - 100Hz

  • Dual RPM inputs (high & low level)

  • 4 wheel/shaft speed inputs

  • Serial port to drive an optional dash display

  • Optional internal yaw sensor (+$400)

  • 6g available (+$160)



Why do we need or want a GPS based logger?

  • More accurate track maps are captured by the GPS

  • No trackside lap beacon required

  • Ability to breakdown the lap into any sectors you choose

  • True vehicle speed logged - no speedo error; no tire slip, deformation, or diameter changes

  • Powerful analysis available with minimal setup, can be used even with no additional inputs

  • Track maps for open circuits (autox, hillclimbs) possible because no beacons are needed

How simple is it to use?

  1. Plug into 12v outlet
  2. Secure the DL1 in a flat spot (Velcro, supplied brackets, etc...)
  3. Put the magnetic GPS antenna on the roof
  4. Secure extra wire length
  5. Put in your CF card and your ready to go

Single button to start or stop logging; advanced setup through DL1 configuration utility to set auto logging based on speed or other parameters.

Suggested inputs for driver improvement:

Basic:  RPM, Throttle Position, and Brake Circuit
Advanced: Steering Angle, Brake System Pressure

Of course any temperature or pressure sensor output can be logged as well.  Some people have even used wideband O2 sensors or infrared temp sensors for tire temps.

"The DL1 exceeded my expectations. "Straight out of the box" only using it's 'basic' features, simply strapping it in and powering it up gave a tremendous amount of information (sector times, accel/decel, speed, etc.). The fact that there aren't special or proprietary cables necessary to tie in other sensors was also a big plus; it only took me literally minutes to tap into the existing OEM TPS and Front Brake sensor (not to mention that it cost me nothing, everyone has some spare 20/22gauge wiring laying around). RPM would have been just as quick, but it took me a number or adjustments to get the pickup to read cleanly (with sufficient signal, without noise).

I found almost no issues applying the DL1 to a bike. Although you lose "lateral-G", it doesn't really matter on a bike; and there is a lean angle variable in the bike setting that is much more useful. The only real issue is finding the space to safely install the logger. The DL1 is very small, however, on sportbikes there is not much space unoccupied that can be accessed easily. In the end, I have to re-route/install the bikes main fuse boxes in order to make room directly under the seat, allowing quick and easy access to the logger
